Did iOS 27 Break ChatGPT Voice Mode with Apple CarPlay?

Since upgrading to iOS 27, incoming texts end my ChatGPT Voice sessions in CarPlay. Here's what happens and what I've checked.

I’ve been talking to ChatGPT on my daily commute since April. OpenAI announced support for Apple CarPlay on April 2, 2026, and the feature quickly became part of my routine.

Then I upgraded to iOS 27 on September 14, 2026, the day Apple released it. Now an incoming text message ends the conversation.

If you’ve been experiencing the same thing, it’s happening to me too.

A Useful Fifteen Minutes

My drive to the office takes about fifteen minutes. In the morning, I start by asking for the day’s weather forecast. There’s a practical reason: I want to know whether I can park on top of the garage or should choose a covered space so I won’t have to walk through rain on the way home.

Next comes a recap of current news. ChatGPT has learned that my interests largely match the topics I cover here: AI, general technology, business, and some politics. If something catches my attention, I ask it to dig deeper. It’s highly adept at doing so.

We’re well beyond the point where an answer has to come from the model’s original training data. ChatGPT’s Live Voice can search the web, so these conversations can cover developments from that morning. I can ask follow-up questions and explore the background behind a headline while keeping my phone put away.

That’s a useful addition to a drive I have to make anyway.

What Changed After the Upgrade

Before iOS 27, an incoming text produced an alert on the CarPlay display. My conversation with ChatGPT continued. Choosing to tap the notification and have Siri read it might have interrupted the session, but simply receiving a message never did.

That changed immediately after the upgrade.

Now the Apple Messages banner appears and the active Voice session ends. I haven’t touched the screen. Siri hasn’t spoken. CarPlay itself stays connected, with its interface still visible. ChatGPT is available in the recent-app strip, but continuing requires reopening it and resuming a previous conversation or starting another.

I get a lot of texts. I barely have a single drive without an interruption now, and I can find myself restarting several times before reaching my destination.

This happens with both blue iMessages and green SMS/RCS texts in Apple Messages.

There’s no visible error or explanation. The interruption can happen a couple of minutes into the trip or near its end; it follows the arrival of a notification.

What I’ve Checked

For anyone comparing their setup with mine, I’m using:

  • An iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 27.0.1.
  • ChatGPT version 1.2026.266, with a Pro subscription and Live selected under Voice settings.
  • Wireless CarPlay through Uconnect 5 in a 2025 Ram 1500, with the 8.4-inch touchscreen.

My phone is locked with its screen off during these conversations. Background conversations was already enabled before troubleshooting began. OpenAI documents that setting as the way to keep Voice running while the device is locked or another app is in use. Automatic startup is enabled too.

On October 3, I tried two comparisons without CarPlay, sending texts from an Android phone while talking to ChatGPT. Neither ended the conversation. For the second test, I explicitly locked the iPhone and confirmed that we could still hear each other before sending the message. Voice continued normally after it arrived.

Those results give Apple and OpenAI something concrete to investigate. They don’t identify which component is responsible. The timing points to a change associated with my iOS 27 upgrade, but I can’t determine whether the fault sits in the operating system, Apple’s Messages app, ChatGPT, Uconnect, or their interaction.

OpenAI support suggested comparing Live with Advanced Voice. I haven’t done that yet; I’ve kept my settings unchanged. I also haven’t tested a wired connection. All the affected sessions described here used wireless CarPlay.

I’ve Reported It to Both Companies

I’ve contacted OpenAI and Apple with the symptoms, configuration, and comparison results, asking that the appropriate teams investigate.

OpenAI’s replies have been AI-assisted, which is entirely expected and on-brand. I didn’t expect an immediate resolution from either company. As of October 4, I have no confirmed fix or engineering diagnosis to report.

I’m writing this so someone searching for why ChatGPT disconnects in CarPlay when a text arrives can find another account of the same experience. I don’t know how widespread it is, but it has become a near-daily problem in my truck.

I hope the reports help Apple and OpenAI identify what changed and resolve it. An incoming message should be able to announce its presence without ending an unrelated conversation. Until the upgrade, that’s exactly how it worked for me.
