Apple’s iPhone Duo, its first folding phone, went on sale Friday, October 23, at $1,999 to $3,199. Within hours, owners began posting photos of inner screens that had failed at the fold, nearly all in the same way. Apple hasn’t commented publicly, and requests from The Verge and 9to5Mac drew no immediate reply.
Where the iPhone Duo’s inner screen cracks
Nearly every photographed failure starts at one point on the crease, a little below the middle of the screen. With the phone open and its front camera at the top right, a bright band of lit pixels runs from that point across the right-hand panel to the edge, and a second line often traces the crease to the bottom. On r/iPhoneDuo, the subreddit where most reports appear, owners call it Crackgate.
The accounts match, too. An owner in Australia who had opened the phone fewer than 20 times in about six hours wrote: “I felt something around the internal hinge, underneath the screen. As I continued opening it, I heard an audible crack, and the screen broke right along the hinge.” The subreddit’s moderators say they checked that owner’s photos and Apple service paperwork. A Dallas buyer who never finished setup wrote: “Maybe folded it 4 times, hinge got tight and then made a loud pop when I pushed past it.” Others report the same stiffness, then a pop.
By Sunday afternoon, at least eight owners, including buyers in the U.S., Australia and India, had posted photos of their own failed phones, and others shared shots of a unit that broke during setup in a Toronto Apple Store, of demo units, and of failures in China. 9to5Mac counted about ten distinct cases by Sunday morning.
What might be breaking inside the hinge
No one outside Apple has identified a cause. One owner’s overlay of Apple’s hinge image on a cracked screen puts the break over a moving part, and deliberate abuse can produce the same failure: JerryRigEverything’s bend test left a permanent green line from the center of the inner screen to the frame. On Sunday, the Korean YouTube channel CuriousHagi took apart a Duo that had cracked in the same spot after being bent backward. One of the hinge’s links, thinner than its neighbors, had broken off at a notch, and the display carried impact marks where the part struck it. The creator thinks the real cause lies elsewhere but offers advice that fits any owner: when “you feel resistance so strong that your gut tells you something’s off, don’t force it open.”
Wear doesn’t explain the pattern. A test machine put 32,640 folds on a Duo for Joanna Stern’s review, CNET’s rig passed 20,000 on Saturday, and a livestream of volunteers opening and closing one by hand, run by Polish YouTuber Kuba Klawiter, had logged 58,106 cycles by 2:56 p.m. Eastern on Sunday, with the test still running. Failures after a handful of openings point instead to a fault some units carry from the factory, though Apple hasn’t confirmed one. The hinge was a known production headache: in September, analyst Jeff Pu cut a 2026 Duo forecast from 7 million units to 6 million over “hinge constraints,” and China’s Jiemian News reported assembly yields just above 60 percent.
How Apple is replacing failed iPhone Duos
Apple Stores have swapped several failed phones on the spot from a few units held back at launch; one store said it was keeping spares because repair parts and processes weren’t fully in place. Supply is thin, though. An Australian store had no 1 TB or 2 TB replacements in either color, and customers of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile say the carriers quoted January for a replacement.
Treatment varies, too. A Verizon customer says an Apple Store decided the phone must have been dropped and suggested buying insurance and filing a claim; that owner returned it through the carrier instead. Apple’s one-year warranty covers “defects in materials and workmanship when used normally,” not accidents. For damage it doesn’t cover, Apple lists $999 to fix the inner display, or $99 under AppleCare+, which costs $199.99 a year with theft and loss protection. Apple’s launch-day troubleshooting page for the hinge says, “There aren’t diagnostics or software remedies for hinge issues,” and its last step is to “replace the inner display assembly.” Apple takes back phones it sold for 14 calendar days after the buyer receives them; carriers set their own rules.
How many iPhone Duos are affected
Nobody outside Apple knows. On Saturday, AppleInsider said contacts at Genius Bars in seven stores, four of them flagships, had seen no broken-screen Duos come in, and the Dallas store called that owner’s phone its first of the day. The public accounts are a sliver of the 6 to 8 million Duos Apple reportedly plans to build this year. But most people whose phones break never say so online, and some posts aren’t genuine: a near-copy of the Australian account appeared in r/SpectrumMobile with the carrier’s name swapped in. Only Apple can count the returns.
Why the hinge was always the question
When Apple introduced the Duo in September, R.A. Parks wrote here that “a hinge is a moving part, and those fail before slabs do,” noting that Apple published no fold rating. These failures aren’t about fold life; they suggest some units leave the factory with a weak point in the hinge. IT teams asked to buy a Duo for an executive have a simple hedge: buy from Apple, whose stores have handled exchanges fastest, and treat any stiffness in the hinge as a reason to stop and take it in.
